Paul's Originals

Paul's Poetry

In 1971, Paul took a song writing class at Long Beach City College where he was a music major.   Here are a few examples of his class work which began as poetry lessons.

To Her Majesty  (1971)

A creation from the regions of the heavens
A monument to the earth and to the sky
She stands steadfastly, clung to life's foundation
As she poses many people pass her by

She reaches far to touch the clouds in sunlight
All brilliant as her floating branches shine
Across my mind awakening past desires
Of living in her presence lost in time

Always peacefulness and beauty do surround her
A resting place for those with troubled souls
A haven from the weary mass confusion
All sentiment and forgiveness dost she hold

She rises to a towering height above us
To shelter us when rain enhances tears
As a mother she is love and understanding
As a father she can wash away our fears

Grandeur is her massive trove of branches
Grandeur is her song in restful sight
Grandeur is her open heart to splender
Grandeur is a tree of love and might

To this majesty might we finally learn of meaning
To this princess of seas and rainbows untold height
To this queen of hearts we bow our heads before thee
To this victory of the soul succumbs the night

The Guide  (1971)

To the west came clouds of thundering fright
They robbed the sun of its gleaming light
Engulfed the land in its steaming pride
To form the reins of this victory ride

Along with clouds there came the night
The fast winds blew just briefing sight
Disturbance filled the rushing air
No peace no silence anywhere

A fortress of towers tumbled down
There were no more powers to be found
The ground was wet all soaked with rain
As if never to be formed again

Montrous clouds did strike the trees
Oh how they fought with all their ease
These aging giants did compete
But fate destroyed all roots complete

Turbulence now had peaked its stride
But few were left to challenge cries
The winds still filled a pulsating air
To reach all lands with a violent scare

In the midst of all this harrowing strife
Grew thoughts of all past peace in life
Grew fertile meadows of morning dew
With singing birds and fantasy too

And now the rivers begged to flow
To where the rains refused to go
The leaves again did long to see
A light from heaven's eternity

This quest for freedom grew and grew
Its message now was listened to
All life did tremble with unrest
And clouds were startled to the test

The giant once again did groan
And rain disturbed the scattered moans
But could not quelch the menacing fight
To bring in day and banish night

The darkness which had fallen still
Beneath the clouds of furious will
Could not withstand the light to shine
Again to towers and trees once blind

Above the sky was turned to blue
As the rivers flowed and the sparrows flew
The trees reached out to touch the sun
Still glowing from the bout it had won

And now peace reigned across the land
The blast of clouds no more would ban
And freedom had its call to claim
The light perpetual guiding flame

Summer  (1971)

My love is summer
She flows like water
Clear streams grow fonder
She sings of life

My love is summer
She cares for flowers
Daisies in wonder
She sings of life

Heaven provides
A field in the sun
Where animals run
Robin can fly
And sing on her throne
A song all his own
In the splender of her majesty
In gowns of silk and satin
And heaven rises just to greet her

My love is summer
Blossoms of clover
Impressions of wonder
She sings of life

My love is summer
Sun glow surrounds her
A season's sweet whisper
She sings of life

Calico  (1971)

We found it first in Calico
Peace reigned in Calico town
The rocks were high in Calico
Their shadows cast eyes on the ground

The night was still in Calico
The moon all-knowing so bright
Beheld our fears in Calico
'bout endless quests for sight

We slept not well in Calico
Upon this Sunday night
As we did sing in Calico
The truth shone not its light

Life aired us through in Calico
Then left us ere to be
Alone and cold in Calico
Still searching for eyes to see

Sleep at last in Calico
But hearts trill with unrest
Behind the face of Calico
Stood beauty, truth, and rest

But only could this Calico
Disguise the voice to hear
The morn we did leave Calico
That sight and sound rang clear
